Paul Summergrad, MD

Dr. Summergrad is Professor of Psychiatry and Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine and Chairman Emeritus of the department of psychiatry at Tufts Medical Center. He previously served as the Dr. Frances S. Arkin professor and chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine and psychiatrist-in-chief at Tufts Medical Center from 2004 until 2023.

Dr. Summergrad served as the 141st president of the American Psychiatric Association from 2014 to 2015. He currently serves as the Secretary for Finances and as a member of the Executive Committee of the World Psychiatric Association.

An international leader in medical psychiatric disorders and care, Dr. Summergrad’s research focuses on mood disorders, medical-psychiatric co-morbidity, and health care policy. He has published extensively with over 150 peer review publications, book chapters and other communications. He has also edited three books and currently serves on the editorial boards of World Psychiatry, and Personalized Medicine in Psychiatry.

Dr. Summergrad is a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a fellow of the American College of Psychiatrists, the American College of Physicians and of the Royal College of Physicians-Edinburgh.

He received the Distinguished Faculty Award from Tufts University School of Medicine in 2015 and the Leadership award of the American Association of Chairs of Departments of Psychiatry in 2018. He was elected to the Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, their highest honor, in 2020. In 2023 Dr. Summergrad received the Massachusetts Psychiatric Society Outstanding Psychiatrist Lifetime Achievement Award and he received the American Psychiatric Association Distinguished Service Award in May 2024.

Dr. Summergrad earned his medical degree from the Jacobs School of Medicine at the University at Buffalo in 1978, completed his residency in internal medicine at Boston City Hospital, and in psychiatry at Massachusetts General hospital where he served as chief resident, and completed psychoanalytic training at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. He is board certified in Psychiatry, Internal Medicine and Psychosomatic Medicine.
